Astana City is the third mission in the GLA campaign of Command & Conquer: Generals.
Background[]
Despite the successes at Almaty to acquire more funds, the GLA was still not in the financial position needed to wage war against the superpowers. To acquire more resources, the GLA sent agents to infiltrate the city of Astana, which was under Chinese control. These agents had managed to spread propaganda among the city's civilians, often citing the worsening conditions that the people had to live through as the result of "imperialist rule". In a short time, resentment and hostility towards the occupying forces increased exponentially among the city's populace.
Key units[]
Events[]
“ | All units! Respond to the city centre! Level fifty-one problem of riots at the old government building! - Police Commissioner stationed in Astana. |
” |
In one night, massive groups of protestors gathered at the city centre had suddenly turned violent and proceeded to destroy the city's infrastructure. As the Chinese-controlled police were unable to quell the riots, the GLA quietly moved in and established a Command Center and Supply Stash just south of the city. The Angry Mobs joined up with the base, and its leaders started the systematic destruction of Astana. Initially, the GLA collected the funds looted to build up its base and capture a civilian hospital and oil derrick, before training support forces to incite the Angry Mobs even more. By this time, the police began patrolling the city in search of the angry mobs and managed to spot them as well as the GLA base. The GLA however managed to overpower and destroy the police force.
Coalition intervention[]
When half of the city was burning to the ground and the local police force destroyed, the Sino-American coalition forces responded by sending in teams to quell the riots. The Chinese forces began garrisoning buildings with Red Guards to prevent them from being destroyed, they also sent Dragon tanks to root out the mobs. Nearby US forces also equipped their Rangers with flash-bang grenades to counter the mobs and also began sending Humvees and Paladin tanks. The GLA, realizing the rapid change in scenario, sent in Toxin Tractors, Scorpion Tanks, and Marauder tanks to counter the threats.
“ | The Americans are trying to quell the riot. Destroy their base of operations at the airport and they will be forced to flee. - Kanwar Khan |
” |
Since the Americans were operating from the city's airport, the GLA sent its Angry Mobs to attack the airport. With a lot of their forces killed and several vehicles lost to the enemy, the remaining US forces decided to retreat and leave the city, leaving the Chinese forces to defend the city. With the Americans gone, the mobs quickly resumed their destruction of the city, all the while looting more funds for their controllers. By the time, the GLA reached and went beyond the required $40,000, the whole city of Astana had been razed to the ground. Unconfirmed reports also suggested that the GLA forces had penetrated and destroyed the Chinese base. This would have meant that Astana had been freed from imperialist control.
Aftermath[]
Although Astana was in urban ruin, the GLA was now in a greater financial position to wage war against the 'infidels'. This would be demonstrated in their attack on an American Airfield in Turkey.
Walkthrough[]
You don't start with anything at all, but considering the resources you gathered can also be used for expansion, this is hardly even an issue.
Build a few Workers as you gain funds. Use Angry Mobs to demolish buildings if you're running short on resources, and work your way straight to a Palace after building an Arms Dealer so you can replace your losses and upgrade their firepower. Once that is done, start rampaging in the map and destroy every neutral building you come across. Toxin Tractors may be needed to clear garrisoned structures before they pick off the Angry Mobs, and feel free to produce additional vehicles as you see fit.
USA reinforcements primarily consist of Rangers, Paladins and Humvees. All of them can be shredded by Angry Mobs, although reaching the airport can be a chore. Toxin Tractors are practically required to clear the way when attacking China's base at the north. Once you're there, demolish their buildings - What they drop will be more than enough.
