Carryall, got the mission!
- Carryall

The Carryall is a Nod aerial transport vehicle in Tiberium Wars and Kane's Wrath.

Background

Prior to the Third Tiberium War, the Brotherhood of Nod's engineers managed to develop their own version of the Carryall, likely derived from the now-retired design that GDI used against them in the Second Tiberium War. Taking after this idea, Nod's take on the Carryall are capable of lifting all but the heaviest of vehicles within their arsenal, and can do so over any terrain. These VTOL aircraft are equipped with four engines on rotating mounts, which provide lift and thrust to the aircraft. However, they appear to differ from the turbofan engines that GDI used, and as such were not related to GDI's line of ORCA aircraft technology.

These aircraft often remained in the higher altitudes of altitudes where they would remain untouched and ignored by most antiaircraft fire and deemed a low enough threat to be ignored by the rest. Once an Air Tower was deployed, these Carryalls could be interfaced with to pick up units at specific, flare-designated locations on the battlefield, whereupon they would drop their cargo at the desired location and leave to repair and refuel at a nearby Nod airbase.

Game Unit

Much like the Nod Armageddon bomber, the Carryall is strictly a support aircraft that cannot be manually built from an Air Tower, and is instead called in via the activation of an ability.

While slightly slower than its GDI counterpart, the V-35 Ox, the Carryall is marginally less fragile than the Initiative's aerial transports. Like the Ox, it is also designed to be able to carry both infantry squads and lighter vehicles, though does not appear to need the use of an attached module to move infantry about the field. Once the selected unit is loaded and properly secured, the Carryall will take flight again and can be manually commanded by their officer.

However, it is by no means capable of transporting troops through enemy-controlled territory, and has relatively weak armor (presumably to cut down on costs and increase speed). As a result, they are capable of withstanding some antiaircraft fire, but often crumple under anything more than a few seconds' of direct exposure. This is further compounded by how they cannot be repaired by any drones except those found at aerial production facilities. Note that the destruction of a Carryall also means the loss of its transported unit.

Like their GDI counterparts, they are also incapable of lifting heavier vehicles within their respective arsenal. The Carryall can airlift most Tier 1 vehicles, though its ability sharply tapers off when it comes to Tier 2 and beyond, and of those can only lift the Beam Cannon and the Specter artillery unit. However, they can ferry all infantrymen deployed by Nod and its Marked of Kane subsect. The Black Hand's specialized forces alone cannot be airlifted, as their commanders do not deploy Air Towers and their troops are accordingly not equipped with the flares needed to call in Carryalls.

Carryalls are not directly constructed at the Air Tower, and are instead called in from higher altitudes where they loiter while awaiting assignment. They can, however, be repaired by the three drones stationed at it if the need rises. The usage of a Carryall also requires their commander to pay a fee of $500 for their deployment.

After the Carryall deposits the unit, the unit in question will not be able to call in another Carryall until its Call for Transport ability's cooldown expires. Unlike in Red Alert 2, however, garrisoned infantry will still be considered directly active on the field, and the timer will still go down even if they are stationed within a structure or unit.

Overall, aside from being able to transport units of a different arsenal and possibly a few modified statistics, they function identically to the GDI V-35 Ox transport. This also includes how they will be ignored by enemy antiaircraft fire after the collected unit is redeployed and its mission is complete.

Changelog

  • Tiberium Wars patch 1.05:
    • hit points increased by 70%
    • fixed an error that sometimes caused Ox transports and Carryalls to become stuck and unselectable when ordered to land next to edges of cliffs
