The Soviets still cover most of the globe. We must continue to fight them wherever they may be. A Soviet fleet has been discovered en route to Hawaii. Destroy this fleet and the Pacific will be ours.
- Mission briefing

Operation: Deep Sea is the seventh mission of the Allied campaign of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2.[1]

Background[]

As the American military and civilian leadership return to Washington, DC from Canada, the Soviet Union was becoming increasingly desperate as they were losing their gains in the American homeland and were now facing attacks from the European Allies. In order to safeguard their presence in the Pacific, they decided to attack and secure the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, apparently trying to replicate the Japanese success of the Pacific War from the original WWII. This time American intelligence knew of this beforehand and set up outposts across the islands to defend against the invasion and dispatched their best commander to lead the defense.

The invasion did not take the Americans by surprise due to their intel beating the Soviets to the punch, but proved overwhelming to the Niihau outpost, which was levelled by Dreadnoughts and used as a staging point for the attack on Oahu, followed by a direct strike against the Pearl Harbor naval base. The loss of the outpost served to warn the Americans of the scope of the invasion and thus, they prepared for the assault and also began to build their navy to counter the Soviets, namely with their Aegis Cruisers to fight the Dreadnoughts' missiles and their Aircraft Carriers to pound the Soviets in retaliation.

Walkthrough[]

Sir, this is not looking good. If we don't get relief soon, we're finished.
- Allied commander of Niihau

Valuable assets[]

  • Tech Airport to the north. Soviets will attempt to capture it. Also an excellent spot for backup base in case Soviets get lucky in Oahu.
  • Tech Hospital in the city to the east.

Tips[]

  • The northern island, Kauai, will remain relatively undisturbed by the Soviet forces. Deploying an Ore Refinery there can boost the player's income, and the addition of an MCV means that Allied operations can continue even if the main base at Pearl Harbor is overrun and destroyed. A few Dreadnoughts may attempt to destroy it, but the addition of AA systems (such as Patriot Missiles) can easily render them harmless.
  • In the event that the Soviet forces construct a Nuclear Missile Silo, a team of spies can be sent via Amphibious Transport to the northeastern shore of Niihau, near a cluster of trees. Sending a spy into the Silo will reset the timer back to ten minutes; sending a spy in during the last minute of the countdown will maximize their effect. However, the base will deploy patrols consisting of dogs to prevent this, and care must be taken to avoid their above-average detection range.
  • Create a large number of Patriot Missile Systems and especially Prism Towers around your base. Since all enemy naval forces are forced through the choke point that is the harbor's entrance, Destroyers can detect Typhoon Submarines and Prism Towers can destroy them.
  • Much like the projectiles of Patriot Missiles, the torpedoes of the submarines are liable to miss when their target is moving away from them. This can be exploited to negate some damage to their would-be victim while the rest of the fleet finishes off the attacking submarine.
  • The Soviet commander will constantly send groups of troops to destroy the Pearl Harbor base, some of which are not even connected to the condition of his base.
    • Soviet naval attacks usually consist of one or two Dreadnoughts, five or six Sea Scorpions, and three or more Typhoon Attack Submarines. A few Aegis Cruisers (to intercept the missiles) and a fleet of Destroyers can counter these attacks.
    • The commander will paradrop in ground forces that will proceed to attack from the north, east, and southern areas of the island. The first wave of paratroopers will be announced, and the civilians near the drop zone will begin panicking.
    • Roughly every three to seven minutes, squads of Rhino Tanks and/or Conscripts with attack your base from the cliffs north of your location and from the nearby city to the east of the harbor. The north squads will usually target your Barracks before attacking any other part of your base. The east squad, however, prioritizes the given Naval Shipyard above everything else.

Aftermath[]

You defended Pearl Harbor with such ferocity that the Pacific is ours.

Pearl Harbor has been saved, but the Hawaiian islands have been devastated by the Soviet onslaught.

The Allies' destruction of the Soviet Navy meant that the Allies now controlled the Pacific Ocean. The Soviet Pacific Fleet would never play a major role in the theater for the rest of the war. Meanwhile Yuri's Psychic Corps struck St. Louis and implanted another Psychic Beacon at the Busch Stadium.

The success of the defense also secured a bold trust from the US Navy. In return the Navy will grant the commander permission to access their crown jewel program, the Navy SEAL, once Pearl Harbor is reorganized.

Trivia[]

  • Even though Hitler was erased from the Red Alert universe timeline, the USS Arizona Memorial is still present in this stage and Sub-Divide.
    • The same case applies to the Iwo Jima Memorial seen in Red Dawn.
  • Even though the Pearl Harbor seen in-game is only a representation, it is still considerably down-scaled for even the standards of the game. The actual harbor is large enough to hold over forty ships but, the in-game version can only hold roughly twenty or thirty without any moving space left available.
  • In the game, the Allied base is located on the west side of the harbor. However, in terms of actual history, the base should have been located on the north and southeast sides of the harbor. This change was probably made for gameplay reasons.
  • This mission is mirrored by Operation: Sub-Divide in the Soviet campaign, which also concerns a Soviet invasion of Pearl Harbor.
    • Oddly, an island that is present on Sub-Divide's map is absent in Deep Sea's.
  • Due to the superior position the player has relative to the enemy, this mission can be "cheesed" relatively easily.
    • As the Soviet forces initially have no ground, the mapmakers placed a Sentry Gun to prevent an instant win. Destroying this Sentry Gun before the MCV can be deployed wins the mission.
      • Ironically, this removes all aspects of naval command from the mission, which is also obviously its focus.
    • Alternatively, the MCV can be captured/destroyed immediately after it deploys on the island, as they do not have many units that can prevent it.
