This is a glossary of terms used in the Dune Universe.
- Arrakis
- Also known as Dune. A desert planet that is the only known source of the spice Melange, and the home of the Fremen.
- Bene Gesserit
- A secretive matriarchal religious group and political power. Its members receive years of training to develop great mental and physical abilities.
- Carryall
- A large planet-bound ornithopter that transports spice mining teams on Arrakis.
- Fremen
- Native humans of the planet Arrakis.
- Guild Navigator
- A member of the Spacing Guild. They are humans who have become mutated and developed prescient abilities through long-term use of the spice Melange, enabling them to safely navigate through interstellar space.
- Harvester
- A large mobile factory use to harvest the spice Melange from the surface of Arrakis.
- House
- A ruling clan of a planet or planetary system.
- House Corrino
- The noble House of the Padishah Empire's hereditary emperors.
- Ix
- Home planet of the Ixians, a technological culture that produces sophisticated machines.
- Landsraad
- A political body consisting of the noble Houses in the Padishah Empire.
- Melange
- Also called Spice. A drug that can prolong life, increase awareness, and unlock prescience in some humans. Arrakis is the only known source.
- Mentat
- Mentats are humans specially trained to have exceptional memory, cognitive, and analytical abilites.
- Ornithopter
- An aircraft that flies by a combination of jet propulsion and bird-like flapping of wings. Mostly used within planetary atmospheres, but also capable of short-range space travel.
- Padishah Empire
- A galactic empire that encompassing the entire portion of the universe explored by humans.
- Sandworm
- An enormous worm-like creature native to the planet Arrakis.
- Sardaukar
- Formidable soldier-fanatics who serve the Padishah Emperors of House Corrino.
- Spacing Guild
- An organization with a monopoly on interstellar travel and banking. See also Guild Navigator.
- Spice
- See Melange.
- Wind trap
- A facility designed to collect moisture from the air.
