- Kane to LEGION
LEGION is an extremely advanced artificial lifeform created by Kane himself. Initially designed to supersede CABAL as the Brotherhood of Nod's premier tactical AI, LEGION's true purpose was to merge with the Tacitus as a key part of Kane's "Ascension" prophecy. LEGION is also the master of the Marked of Kane, and represents the player character in Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath.
|“|| Even CABAL will pale by comparison.|
Inspiration for LEGION's creation occurred while Kane was confined in a medical tube after the Second Tiberium War, and in the period immediately following his release. While formulating the Brotherhood of Nod's future in his plans, and ultimately the objectives and direction of the Third Tiberium War, Kane set out to create a new lifeform based on CABAL.
While CABAL had failed, it provided a firm foundation for improvement and Kane thus envisioned a new creation that in time could by far surpass the old. He used knowledge gained from the Tacitus to create his "child", an artificial superintelligence which he dubbed "LEGION". By 2034, the first version of LEGION was operational (though not yet named).

- Kane to LEGION
Nod faced rather familiar difficulties after the Firestorm Crisis. Anton Slavik, leader of the Black Hand and Kane's chosen successor, was assassinated and usurped by Marcion. Forthwith the Brotherhood fragmented severely, with Marcion openly leading the Black Hand, the core faction of Nod, with heretical beliefs. Effectively abandoned by all, Kane first activated LEGION to execute his plans to reforge the Brotherhood of Nod from its smoldering ashes.
LEGION's first move was to instigate a massive civil insurrection against GDI from within the slums of Rio de Janeiro. The sudden and seemingly uncoordinated mass uprising spread throughout Brazil like wildfire, covertly bringing South America's Nod factions under Kane's will again. LEGION then proceeded to recover the last remaining record of the Brotherhood's stealth technologies from a GDI research facility in Australia. This was the lead up to an assault on Marcion's stronghold, and Kane forcibly regaining the heretic's and the Black Hand's loyalty. Marcion was thus made to act as the public face of a resurgent Brotherhood, while Nod's prophet remained hidden in the shadows.
Lastly, LEGION captiously destroyed an Australian GDI research installation specialized in Tiberium abatement technology, setting off a cataclysmic explosion which rendered much of the island continent into Yellow and Red Zones. This "Grand Gesture" signalled the return of Nod on the world stage, with all of GDI's scrutiny falling squarily upon Marcion rather than on Kane and LEGION. With GDI's public standing as the protector of humanity and a foil against Tiberium's infestation now both tarnished, and with the Brotherhood again coalescing into a global power behind the veil of peace, LEGION was deactivated for upgrades as part of Kane's preparations for the Third Tiberium War.
Third Tiberium War
|“|| The signal of the Tacitus has returned. You must find the artifact. You must capture it for Kane. I fear, however, if you do, that you will become something... obscene. CABAL's cyborg army murdered many innocents—murdered my parents! I pray I am wrong about you, LEGION! I pray for us all.|
- Alexa Kovacs to LEGION
During LEGION's period of slumber, Nod successfully rebuilt, once again becoming a covert superpower. The development of the fledgling superintelligence became one of the Brotherhood's most secret projects, headed by Abbess Alexa Kovacs, a prodigy in neural networks and the designated ward of the initiative. The AI awakened significantly enhanced and upgraded, in time for the fateful events of the Third Tiberium War.
Under Kovacs' supervision, LEGION was crucial in securing access codes for the global defence matrix in Johannesburg, allowing it to identify weaknesses in the network of ion cannons protecting the Philadelphia. Another success came when the AI successfully staged an incident at the GDI Treasury, forcing Director Redmond Boyle to remain planetside and assume command over GDI after the elimination of its top brass. This was the first part of Kane's plan; the second was preventing doctor Alphonse Giraud from convincing Boyle not to use the ion cannon to level Temple Prime, while also recruiting another great mind for the Brotherhood. Other pivotal assignments it was given during this time were the destruction of the ZOCOM task force's MARV in the African Red Zone, and the design and construction of the "Redeemer" war machine.
Prior to Temple Prime's destruction, LEGION was forced by Alexa to act against Kane and conduct a false-flag operation: an attack on the Temple in the guise of Kilian Qatar. This was achieved by a special module she used, which corrupted Kane's broadcasts and allowed only Alexa to come through. Interestingly, this problem was subverted when the Scrin invaded and Kane was able to contact LEGION directly, informing him about the Tacitus signals and their relevance to the AI. When LEGION was finally ordered to capture the device in China, everything went wrong, as Alexa's paranoia finally made her snap. Her mistrust of the AI, which only grew deeper as she agonized over her parents' murder by CABAL years ago, developed into an obsession as she gradually understood the scope of the project she was a ward of.
In what she perceived a defense of Kane and the Brotherhood, Kovacs infected LEGION with a powerful virus, corrupting its systems and forcing it into the digital equivalent of a coma. LEGION's final visual input before it shut down was her suicide, right in front of the Prophet.
|“|| LEGION, my child, you are my greatest creation! It is time for you to take center stage! Time for you to achieve the purpose for which you were created! One vision, One purpose!|
- Kane's words as LEGION is merged with the Tacitus
Despite Kovacs' efforts, she proved unable to permanently deactivate LEGION. The AI was upgraded with Scrin-derived technology while inactive and Kane prophesized that LEGION would resurrect itself, and it did so independently in the aftermath of the Third Tiberium War in 2052. Kane believed the AI was roused by signals from the Tacitus.
Kane wasted no time directing LEGION to reclaim the artifact, as GDI's experiments had rendered the data matrix dangerously unstable and it was imperative to recover it before it was too late. LEGION then "awakened" the Marked of Kane, a highly advanced cyborg army created but left dormant after the end of the Second Tiberium War.
The AI used them to assault GDI's Rocky Mountains Complex where the Tacitus was stored. The raid was successful, and with the Tacitus back in Kane's hands LEGION interfaced and merged with the device. A key part of Kane's vision of "Ascension", this enabled Nod's prophet to use the vast knowledge contained inside the data matrix to its utmost potential within the "Great Beyond".
