The CnC TDRA Map Editor, referred to in the source code license as The Command & Conquer Map Editor[1], is the official map editor distributed with the Command & Conquer: Remastered Collection.

The editor can be used to create and edit both multiplayer maps and singleplayer scenarios for Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert, and publish them as usable maps for Tiberian Dawn - Remastered and Red Alert - Remastered on the Steam Workshop.

Features[]

The map editor can be used to make both multiplayer maps and scripted missions for single player. It allows placing terrain tiles, map decorations, units, buildings, resources, multiplayer start positions, and cell-trigger markings and waypoints to use in the mission scripting. It also has three map settings dialogs: one for general map-related settings like the map name, mission briefing and the setting to make it a singleplayer scenario, one to add scenario scripting, and another to add the unit team definitions to use in the scripting.

The map editor and its corresponding source code are free software under the GPL version 3.0 license.[2]

Fan upgrades[]

Even though the inclusion of the map editor was welcomed by the fans, it was clear that the program had many issues, and that the developers did not have the time to polish and finish it. Thanks to the release of the source code, the fanbase got the chance to amend this.

The first person to start fixing up the editor was Rampastring, who replaced the cumbersome image dropdown lists, improved zoom levels, and tweaked the sizes of items in the selection lists.[3] However, he later abandoned the project to work on his own map editor for DTA/TS/RA2.[4] Despite Rampastring's upgrades, his release still contained many bugs, and his added features and upgrades were not universally applied to all aspects of the editor. A later fork of Rampastring's project by ScreamingChicken added megamap support for Tiberian Dawn maps,[5] using the map format from Sole Survivor, which was already supported in several C&C: Remastered mods as well as in the Vanilla Conquer project.

Mobius Map Editor[]

The project was later forked from Rampastring's code by Nyerguds, who completed the upgrades Rampastring started, incorporated the TD megamap support as well, and added hundreds of additional fixes and quality of life improvements, like multithreading, drag & drop, tooltips, power and silo statistics, menu shortcuts, Sole Survivor as third supported game type, and much more.[6][7] This project was dubbed "Mobius Map Editor", and remains in active development. On July 9, 2023, Nyerguds announced the release of a new version that made the editor fully functional on the files from the original games alone, making it usable independently from the Remastered Collection.

Pre-release[]

Pre-loading for the Remastered Collection was unlocked on June 1st 2020. While Steam's preload kept all files encrypted until the actual release, this was apparently not the case on EA's Origin platform. This had the side effect that, while the game itself remained locked until release through the platform's DRM system, the map editor could already be accessed by people who pre-ordered and pre-loaded the game on Origin,[8] giving Origin users an early look at all the visuals of the remastered games. It didn't take long for videos to get posted online to show all these findings.[9] [10]
