Command & Conquer

Publisher: Virgin Interactive (1995-1998)
Electronic Arts (1998-present)
Description: Command & Conquer (abbreviated as C&C or CnC) is a real-time strategy video game franchise, first developed by Westwood Studios. The first game was based upon Westwood Studios' landmark strategy game Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty and introducing trademarks followed in the rest of the series. This includes full motion video cutscenes with a notable ensemble cast to progress the story, as opposed to digitally in-game rendered cutscenes. Westwood Studios was purchased by Electronic Arts in 1998 and eventually closed down in 2003. The studio and some of its members were absorbed into EA Los Angeles, which continued development on the series until 2010. Several other studios were also involved, such as BreakAway Games, Victory Games, Electronic Arts Phenomic, EAsy Studios and Envision Entertainment.

Command & Conquer games are divided into three universes: the Tiberium Universe being a dark sci-fi vision of the Earth's future after being contaminated by an alien substance called Tiberium; the Red Alert Universe being a more light-hearted representation of wars between the Western Allies and the Soviet Union; and the Generals Universe being a slightly futuristic take on modern warfare, inspired by contemporary conflicts.
