They can still lose to Apocalypse tanks in one-on-one matches, making them better to use in large groups against vehicles. However a fully elite tank destroyer will only narrowly lose to an elite Apocalypse provided it pull off the first attack, making Elite Tank Destroyers potentially rather dangerous when matching cost for cost. 2 Tank Destroyers that cost nearly the same as an Apocalypse tank, just $50 more, will beat one. The vehicle resembles more of an assault gun than a tank, having a fixed gun instead of a rotating turret. The whole vehicle, therefore, does need to turn to fire although that is rarely a detriment to acquiring targets.

The Tank Destroyer's sabot rounds easily reduces tanks to scrap metal in short order. The ''UltraAP'' damage type deals full damage to units with ''light'' and ''heavy'' armour, less than half damage to ''medium'' armour, and barely any to everything else; hence, the tank destroyer's weapon is efficient against heavy tanks and lightly armoured vehicles, but oddly less so against miners (who have the Medium Armor typing) and hardly anything against infantry and buildings, making support with Prism tanks a must to compensate this weakness. Their armor is comparable to other main battle tanks, being as equally strong as the Rhino heavy tank and better than the Grizzly and the Lasher. However their speed is only average, making it less suited for hit and run attacks unless going up against heavier vehicles. The fact they are useless against infantry makes them vulnerable to even conscripts and GIs, unless ordered to crush them beneath their treads which is the only way that tank destroyers can kill infantry.

Revision as of 01:38, 20 April 2023

The tank destroyer is an Allied anti-armour vehicle in Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge, and is only available to Germany as a country-specific unit.

Official description

German scientists have developed the Tank Destroyer, a unit designed specifically to give German forces an edge against enemy armour. While very weak against structures or infantry, Tank Destroyers are extremely powerful against enemy vehicles, and can be used either to clear the way for your own attacks or to blunt incoming columns of enemy armour.
- Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 manual

Background

The German Tank Destroyer can easily eliminate enemy vehicles. Its advanced armor-piercing gun is weak against enemy infantry and structures.
- Red Alert 2 German multiplayer loading screen

The German tank destroyer has a large 120mm anti-tank gun, mounted on a flexible, tracked platform, which is capable of easily destroying enemy tanks, even punching through the heavy armour of Apocalypse tanks and ore miners using advanced sabot rounds. However, the tank destroyer was strictly capable of providing anti-armour support, as it was nearly useless against infantry or structures. It has decent armor but is unable to attack air units unless they are landed on the ground or the Air Force Command.

It is not known to have operated after the events of the Psychic Dominator Disaster.

Game unit

The Tank Destroyer's sabot rounds easily reduces tanks to scrap metal in short order. The UltraAP damage type deals full damage to units with light and heavy armour, less than half damage to medium armour, and barely any to everything else; hence, the tank destroyer's weapon is efficient against heavy tanks and lightly armoured vehicles, but oddly less so against miners (who have the Medium Armor typing) and hardly anything against infantry and buildings, making support with Prism tanks a must to compensate this weakness.

Tank destroyers are one of the possible crate bonuses in skirmish and multiplayer matches.

AI behavior

Tank Destroyers controlled by the AI have the following attack patterns:

  • All difficulties: 4x targeting vehicles

Quotes

Note: in Red Alert 2, the tank destroyer shares its quotes with the Grizzly battle tank.

When selected

  • Tank destroyer reporting.
  • No armour's too tough!
  • They gotta get through me first!
  • Not a tank I can't break.
  • Deutschland's finest.

When moving

  • Advancing.
  • In the field.
  • Moving forward.

When ordered to attack

Trivia

  • Since World War II, real-life tank destroyers had been largely phased out. Their roles are taken by advanced IFVs such as M2 Bradley, which carries anti-tank missiles.
  • The tank destroyer is similar in appearance to the cut Howitzer unit and like it is based on the M110 howitzer. Though, the tank's chassis is taken from a Merkava in the installer slide.
