The pulse scanner was a type of sensor used by the Steel Talons.

Background

The pulse scanner was a stationary sensor that automatically sent out an alert when it detects nearby enemies. Presumably, it functioned the similarly to the Orca's rechargeable pulse scan, since it could also detect stealth units. However, it required several seconds to transmit the alert, during which it could be destroyed.

It is possible that the Pulse Scanner was still under development; each scanner would only send an alert once and would fail to trigger again even if all nearby enemies vacated and returned to the area.

History

In 2034, the Steel Talons placed a number of these pulse scanners near Marcion's stronghold in Australia. However, Marcion's Black Hand somehow found a way to bypass them, allowing his forces to patrol near them without triggering their alarm.

When loyalist Nod forces led by LEGION attacked Marcion's compound, they encountered these pulse scanners, and LEGION was instructed to destroy them to prevent them from alerting the Steel Talons. Should LEGION fail to do so before destroying Marcion's stronghold, the Steel Talons would attempt to intercept Marcion's convoy and kill him during his escape.

Trivia

• Though their main purpose in the only mission they appear in seems to be to summon minor reinforcements who harass the player, the aforementioned reinforcements typically only encounter and battle Marcion's significantly more powerful patrols.
• The Black Hand forces in the area completely ignore the Pulse Scanners.
• Oddly, the Steel Talons did not deploy these in any facilities they were charged with guarding.
