VTOL is an abbreviation for Vertical Take-Off and Landing. The original VTOL design was based on plans by Nikola Tesla. VTOL works by directed thrust. In essence, the thrust produced by a jet engine is directed towards the ground, and assuming that this thrust is greater than the weight of the aircraft, the aircraft will accelerate upwards. Unfortunately, this generally means running the aircraft on afterburners, which consumes large amounts of fuel. Furthermore, the VTOL system generally takes up a large portion of an aircraft's available fuselage, meaning less room for ordinance and fuel. VTOL tech was used widely by GDI replacing traditional aircraft and helicopters like C-130 Hercules and F-18 Hornets.
