Westwood 3D (W3D) is the proprietary engine game engine used for 3D video games developed by Westwood Studios. It was a heavily modified version of the SurRender 3D engine developed by Hybrid Graphics Ltd.[1] It was succeeded by the Strategy Action Game Engine, whose initial version uses the W3D rendering technology as its basis, although with a new 3D architecture built on top of it.[2]
Contrary to popular belief, Emperor: Battle for Dune does not use the W3D engine but rather Intelligent Games' proprietary Xanadu engine.[3]
